Magaldrate is a common antacid drug that is used for the treatment of gastro esophageal reflux. Magaldrate has a variable composition corresponding approximately to Al5Mg10(OH)31(SO4)2.xH2O and contains Mg(OH)2 content Between 49.2 % to 66.6 % on Dried Basis and Between 32.1 % to 45.9 % Al(OH)3 content on Dried Basis and Between 16.0 % to 21.0 % SO4 content on Dried Basis and Between 90% to 105% of Al5Mg10(OH)31(SO4)2 Assay on Dried Basis.
Magaldrate is a common antacid drug that is used for the treatment of duodenal and gastric ulcers, esophagitis from gastroesophageal reflux.Magaldrate is a hydrated complex of hydroxy magnesium aluminate. It initially reacts rapidly with acid and releases aluminium hydroxide which then acts more slowly. The freshly released alum hydroxide is in the impolymerized, more reactive form. It is a good antacid with prompt and sustained neutralizing action. Simethicone when added offers additional benefit by preventing flatulence development.
Magaldrate is used to treat a sour stomach, acid indigestion, heartburn and gas. It is an antacid that neutralizes the stomach acid and slowly increases the pH level of the stomach.There are very few possible side effects of Magaldrate that include intestinal pain, constipation and diarrhea. More serious side effects that need medical attention are loss of appetite, tarry stools, slow reflexes, vomiting and rashes.
